CURACAO: A Piece of Paradise
An educational, cultural and social explosion for the entire family!

“Bon tardi” (Welcome),

For several years I had delayed a visit to one of the Caribbean best kept secrets – the island of Curacao. A committed associate from the Curacao Tourist Board – who knew of my love for Africa and African heritage – has for years told me – I must go to see her Island. Well -- I just returned from a whirlwind tour of Curacao. It is to become one of my favorite places for a quick visit (forget the plane delays -“island time”) and for short African and cultural tours, fun, sun, dance and beauty Curacao is “Dushi” (beautiful) – I love that word! It is a colorful palette everywhere.

Here is why I fell in love with the island – it’s only 21/2 hours from MIA (nonstop), it is out of the hurricane range and rainy seasons, it has the most beautiful blue/green waters – next to my home area of the emerald coast of Florida, amazing cultural diversity and history ( Dutch/European and African in the majority), one of the best African heritage museums I have seen outside of Africa and of course beaches galore, caves/corals and beautiful people who seem not to age. I must thank the great herbalist - who saved my trip from disaster from a bad asthma attack - by providing me with a great syrup concoction sold at her herb garden farm and shop. She was recommended from hotel staff to every native as asked for a great pharmacy. IT WORKED! This was a part of an awe inspiring tour through with her in her garden! I love the out of doors - but this was cool!!! One of the main reasons for my NEW LOVE is that the price is right! Hotel and lodge accommodations options for all $$ levels. I stayed at the Renaissance Hotel and casino at the port. I have my choices for different occasions and people.  I LOVE CURACAO!

Did I say casino – they are everywhere! Not being a player – I cannot say how great they are – but several had a great time trying with the free play given by the resorts. The Tram ride around downtown Willemstad is a delight – we stopped at several locations for history and photo shots. We really got a feel for the downtown area and how to navigate as well as cross “to the other side on the waterway. The Tour guides are phenomenal (did I say that before)?

The activities are so diverse – I toured the island following the Slave route from the shore to shore on the island, across the trail (now highway) to the slave blocks in town. Along the way, I witnessed the remains of the original stone walls built to contain the slaves in their walk across the island (50 -60 miles) or to and from plantations for work. There are remaining slave quarters –some restored for elaborate hotel accommodations in the city, and of course preserved Plantation homes. The country side and architecture reflects the diversity of the nationalities living there and the wonderful stories of how it all happened. I was truly impressed with the vastness of the culture and the pride of the diverse heritage of the people – eager to share the story. Yes, English is one of the four languages widely spoken by all of the locals.

We danced away the night at a hill top Fort with the best food, drink, music, and people on the island. The out door event was cooled by the ever flowing wind of the island. The next night I participated in a cooking Class. Oh yeah – there  is nothing like the party that go’s on while learning to cook (seriously) island fare with simple foods and gourmet techniques – under the directions of a renowned local chef!  You can be serious – BUT this is a vacation!!!

I have wonderful, guides, drivers, air conditioned vehicles, and lovely places to stay for the very romantic to free-loving spirits to the rich and the famous. Travel while it is still emerging and the crowds are not flooding the street (other than on days the ships are in port) – but they hardy leave the downtown duty free shops. There are many – and all of the designer shops are there.

If you are cruising to this port let me arrange a unique tour experience and a great day for you!

Although I am preserving my natural tan – many in my group had time to sun bath, dive (one of the greatest dive location in the Caribbean – I am told), or just enjoy a spa treatment.

I cannot tell you how excited I was on this tour (and I love them all) – but I hope you “get my drift” and would like to join me a most enriching journey to Curacao or you can go on your own.

For more information on Curacao call me or visit www.curacao.com and then call me (954-484-5773). Stay tune for an upcoming escorted tour with me.

Please let me share my love with you!

“Danki” (Thank You),
Meredith
